What Is Propylene Glycol & Vegetable Glycerin?

Posted by Courtney McElligott on

Propylene Glycol & Vegetable Glycerin

All e juices contain vegetable glycerin (VG) and/or propylene glycol (PG) as a “base” ingredient, the liquid that carries the flavor and combines with water to make the rich, smooth vapor you enjoy.

While both VG and PG are perfectly capable of keeping your vape full and flavorful, there are differences between them that might shape your decision when buying e juice. VG is a little thicker and sweeter than PG, and produces a bigger vapor cloud . In contrast, PG provides a stronger throat hit, but with less vapor per puff. So, with VG-based vaping liquids, expect a light throat hit with sweet undertones and thick clouds of vapor.

How and Why We Use VG in E Juice

Central Vapors Flavored E Juices is composed of just a few select liquid ingredients, the most common liquid blend of E Cig Juice is 50% PG and 50% VG, while our Premium Prestige Collection e juices use a blend of 60% VG and 40% PG.

As you can see, different juices use different proportions of each kind—but what exactly is VG. VG is a common compound made from processing fruits or vegetables like palm, coconut, or soybeans. Though you may never have noticed it before, it can be found in the ingredient list of many foods and cosmetics.

Propylene Glycol or (PG) is one of the primary ingredients in e-cigarettes. According to research studies dating back to the 1940’s, this ingredient has been used in inhalants for quite some time in devices such as asthma inhalers, air disinfectants in hospitals and restaurants, and entertainment centers as well such as theaters, bars, and restaurants. This substance is also a main ingredient of fog machines.

Vegetable Glycerin or (VG) is also a main component used in e-liquids. VG is the substance in an e-liquid that makes the liquid thicker. It is a carbohydrate that is usually derived from plant oils. This substance is used as a sweetener in many foods as well. Most e-liquid providers now use USP Grade VG rather than Food Grade.

VG is also used in place of alcohol for many extracts.
Products with Vegetable Glycerin can be found in various common items around your house. A few examples include:
• Sugar substitute
• In Beauty products including makeup, mousse, shampoo, bubble bath, after shave, and deodorant
• Pet food
• Soap
• Skin and hand cream
• Baked goods – increase moisture
• As a thick gel for creams, gel capsule pills, rubs and jellies
• Eye & ear drops, toothpastes, pastes, and many dental care products

Glycerine is classified by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as “generally recognized as safe” (GRAS) and complies with specifications for the Food Chemicals Codex. If your interested to know actually what molecules make up the compound Glycerin, check out the  technical data in the MSDS Sheet.

Like we mentioned above, VG does add a little bit of sweetness to whatever you’re vaping. With our Craft Collection juices, we use this to our advantage! Flavors like Revolution have a little bit of sweetness to them. Plus, because VG produces impressively large clouds of vapor, these flavors will deliver consistently thick plumes right before your eyes.

Mixing PG and VG for DIY eJuice

If ever considered making your own DIY eJuice, your now one step closer after understanding the relationship between propylene glycol and vegetable glycerin. The two key take away points for anyone interested in DIY ejuice is firstly, your most likely going to want to use both in your first few DIY eJuice mixtures until you get a feel for how you personally prefer your eJuice to be mixed. Secondly, PG is the flavor carrier and while too much in your DIY mix will make for a raspy throat hit, it does help bring out all the tasty flavors in your ejuice. On the other hand VG will slightly dull the flavor but remember is also produces more vapor and a great smoothness for a much more pleasurable vaping experience. Mixing DIY ejuice is not quite as complicated as it first may seem but lucky for you, our friends over at BestClearomizer have come up with a really handy  reference guide for making DIY ejuice so take a peek if your interested getting started with DIY

As you can see, VG brings a lot to our e liquids. To explore some of our VG-containing e juices, check out our complete line of vape juices.
